Did I do something to offend you? I don't understand why you have rebuffed my Google Wave advances... I've been nothing but nice to you. I even had a friend try to hook me up with his invite and still you deny me.Tell me... What did I do? Come here, baby. Let me hold you. Is it because of my relationship with Apple? Oh come on, Google. That's not the same thing. I mean... … [Read more...]
The Daughtry Effect
Much has been made of the USA finishing "last" in the vote for hosting the 2016 olympics. Partisan pundits are pontificating ad nauseam that the last place finish is a failure of the current administration. The truth is, that the USA suffered the same fate as Chris Daughtry. For those of you who don't remember (or care), Chris Daughtry was the heavily favored American Idol … [Read more...]
Some days, technology is okay.
Technology pays my bills. That being said, there are days I go full Luddite and want to smash various bits of silicon all over my floor. Other days are like today.Earlier, I was outside and I decided to peek in on Twitter. Scoble posted a link to an article on Smashing Magazine's site warning about a Wordpress vulnerability in pre-2.8.4 versions of the platform. I manage a … [Read more...]

One Card (App) to Rule Them All
A while ago, I got tired of fishing through my wallet for any of the myriad rewards program cards that I have. I also started leaving them at home to prevent my wallet from turning into a meatball in my pocket. That got me thinking: Wouldn't it be great to have just one card to carry around with you?I started sketching out architecture diagrams - a central repository where all … [Read more...]
WolframAlpha update
So, WolframAlpha has been out a while now and I've had several chances to use it. Occasionally, I've used it when I needed it. It always takes a while for a tool to take root in my psyche. Occasionally, a tool proves itself so useful that it takes root quickly (like Google, back in the day). WolframAlpha has proven itself to be that useful. The power is that you ask a … [Read more...]

Experience Design Part 1: Definition
I've been asked to present to the senior management of one of our clients the fundamentals of Experience Design, as well as some thoughts about how they could benefit from employing the tools and techniques of an XD methodology. As I put my XD hat back on and collect my thoughts, I thought I'd capture those thoughts here. I usually define XD this way: Experience Design is … [Read more...]
Why Microsoft Has It Wrong
Microsoft, or at least the software giant we've come to know and... well... the big software company, is going to die. Here's why:Kodak was in love with film. They thought there was no way that film was ever going to go away. Even as digital photography took hold and people were gradually won over by the convenience and capabilities of digital photography, Kodak stuck to … [Read more...]
IE8 Great… At First.
So, I installed IE8 on my machine at work. Initially, I was quite impressed. It seemed to render quite quickly (with the exception of CSS3 animation, which I kind of expected). On Microsoft-specific stuff, like Sharepoint, it actually seemed to be a vast improvement over IE7. The page renders were downright zippy. Interacting with Office Live Spaces was fantastic - the … [Read more...]
