Technology pays my bills. That being said, there are days I go full Luddite and want to smash various bits of silicon all over my floor. Other days are like today.
Earlier, I was outside and I decided to peek in on Twitter. Scoble posted a link to an article on Smashing Magazine’s site warning about a WordPress vulnerability in pre-2.8.4 versions of the platform. I manage a stable of blogs for our company, so I logged into the admin panel (still on my phone) and kicked off an install on one of the blogs that hadn’t been updated, yet. All without having to even put down my phone.
Next, on Facebook, I had a few friend requests/confirmations. Some of them were friends I had lost touch with, and some were people whom I have a great deal of respect for. One of them has a book coming out which anyone who uses a computer to store facets of their life should check out: http://www.totalrecallbook.com. I was lucky enough to be able to produce the video on the site. I got the chance to speak to a lot of very smart people in the course of doing so.
Finally, my wife was able to install Skype on her laptop and we finished the kids’ night by placing a video call to Grandma Fancy Nancy (my mom). It’s funny, my kids live in the science fiction world of my youth and will never know any different.
Today was a good technology day. I hope that the feel-good vibe can carry me through because I have a lot of technology obstacles to overcome when the long weekend is over and I return to work – when technology starts paying the bills again.
